Supported by the China Foundation for Human Rights Development (CFHRD), the "Healthy China Lecture Hall" program held its first offline event recently in Xinchang county, Shaoxing city, Zhejiang province, bringing expert health knowledge directly to local communities.

Hosted by the China Federation of Radio and Television Associations (CFRTA), the event was co-organized by Huawen Voice (Beijing) Culture Communication Co., Ltd., the Xinchang county government and the Shaxi town government. Through expert interactions, community exchanges and the recording of special program episodes, the program aims to make professional health science popularization more accessible, improve public health literacy and contribute to the building of a beautiful and harmonious countryside.

At the launch ceremony, Meng Dong, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and vice president of CFRTA; Pan Xiangming, president of the Health China Promotion Committee under CFRTA; and Wang Qi, deputy director of the Science Popularization Department at the China Health Education Center under the National Health Commission, delivered speeches alongside local officials. They shared views on public health concepts, grassroots health education and rural health services, calling on the program to continue leveraging its platform to bridge the last mile of health science communication and safeguard public well-being through public welfare.

Meng presented science popularization expert certificates and health promotion ambassador certificates to Zhang Feng, chief ophthalmology expert at Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University; Han Xue, a swimming world champion; and Kong Xue, a short track speed skating world champion. The newly appointed experts and ambassadors pledged to use their professional expertise and public influence to spread practical, science-based health knowledge.

During the event, medical specialists from Beijing Tongren Hospital and the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine gave health talks on common conditions — covering eye care, traditional Chinese medicine wellness, management of frequent ailments and scientific health practices — and organized free screening clinics for local residents.

Looking ahead, the "Healthy China Lecture Hall" will continue to work at the grassroots level, partnering with leading doctors, sports and cultural figures, and charitable organizations to hold regular offline science popularization activities and produce accessible, people-centered health content. By promoting healthy lifestyles more broadly, the program seeks to contribute to the Healthy China initiative and the development of a beautiful and harmonious countryside.

Liang Jing, president of Jiangxi People's Publishing House, spoke as a representative of donating organizations. She said the publisher has long been committed to serving national strategies through its publishing work and promoting reading through public welfare initiatives. By participating in the "Smile Rainbow" reading plan, Jiangxi People's Publishing House will use quality books as a bridge to sustain reading activities and help children thrive, she added.

Dong Ruifeng, deputy secretary of the Yaozhou district Party committee in Tongchuan, Shaanxi province, spoke on behalf of the designated assistance areas. He noted that with support from the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, Yaozhou has steadily improved its grassroots reading infrastructure, but gaps remain in the supply of quality reading resources and the promotion of youth reading. The arrival of the "Smile Rainbow" reading plan will bring richer reading resources to local young people, and Yaozhou will ensure that these public welfare resources are well managed and put to effective use, he said.

At the ceremony, Nie and other officials presented donation certificates to contributing organizations and awarded "Smile Rainbow Charity Book House" plaques to representatives of areas receiving rural revitalization assistance from the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee.

According to the organizers, "Smile Rainbow" is a public welfare reading brand developed by the China Press and Publishing Media Group. Since 2017, "Smile Rainbow" activities have been held in Beijing, Jinan, Suzhou, Jinggangshan and Hong Kong, donating nearly 100,000 books with a total retail value of approximately 1 million yuan. The newly launched reading plan is an upgraded version of the original brand. Its first round of donations will target three areas receiving rural revitalization assistance from the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee — Xunwu county in Jiangxi, Yaozhou district in Shaanxi, and Horqin Right Wing Middle Banner in Inner Mongolia — with books worth 1 million yuan at retail value. The program will gradually expand to cover other designated assistance areas under central Party and state institutions, building a sustainable rural reading support system through targeted resource provision, long-term activity operations and standardized public welfare fund management, injecting new momentum into the high-quality development of culture and education in these communities.
